Israel has a vital and significant English-language literary scene. The three featured poets at this event each have impressive credentials as writers and teachers, both in Israel and the U.S. The four invited readers are published poets and artists in their own rights, with their own accomplishments.
The readers include members of both the Israel Association of Writers in English (IAWE) and Voices Israel, and in some cases are members of both. For the price of a non-metaphoric beer (well worth drinking on its merits), you can hear a variety of poetic voices from these seven poets.
Featured Reader Bios:
Brooklyn-born Steven Sher (aka Shlomo Yashar) made aliyah in 2012. He is the author of 15 books including, most recently, Uncharted Waters (New Feral Press, 2017), The House of Washing Hands (Pecan Grove Press, 2014) and Grazing on Stars: Selected Poems (Presa Press, 2012). Since the 1970s his writing has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide. Recent appearances range from Veils, Halos & Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women to The Second Genesis: an Anthology of Contemporary World Poetry and New Voices: Contemporary Writers Confronting The Holocaust (due in 2019 from Vallentine Mitchell, London). His work has been featured by Symphony Space (Selected Shorts) and Poetry In Motion, and was an Oregon Book Awards finalist. This past November (2018) he received the Glenna Luschei Distinguished Poet Award and was featured at the 35th annual San Luis Obispo Poetry Festival in California. He has also taught at many universities/workshops since the 1970s and has served as an editor or consultant across the print media/publishing/literary spectrum. Reuven Goldfarb is a writer, teacher, and rabbinic deputy. He has published poetry, stories, essays, articles, and Divrei Torah in scores of periodicals and anthologies and won several awards. He published and edited AGADA, the illustrated Jewish literary magazine (1981-88), taught Freshman English at Oakland’s Merritt College (1989-97) and two courses, "Poetry Immersion" and "Short Story Intensive," as a free-lancer. He now serves as copy editor for books and manuscripts and coordinates monthly meetings for the Upper Galilee chapter of Voices Israel. He and his wife Yehudit reside in Tzfat, in northern Israel, where they established Bayt Maor HaLev Center for Movement, Healing, and Language Arts. Under its auspices they host classes, workshops, and a weekly shiur in their home.
Michael Dickel’s poetry has won international awards, including the Rueben Rose Prize, and been translated into several languages. His poetry collection, Nothing Remembers, is due out from Finishing Line Press. Previous books include: Breakfast at the End of Capitalism, The Palm Reading after The Toad’s Garden, War Surrounds Us, Midwest / Mid-East, and The World Behind It, Chaos… He co-edited Voices Israel Volume 36, was managing editor for arc-23 and 24, and is a past-chair of the Israel Association of Writers in English. He is a contributing editor of The BeZine (TheBeZine.com). With producer-director David Fisher, he received a U.S. N.E.H. grant to research and write a script about Yiddish Theatre. Yehudit Goldfarb, Ph.D., is a writer, photographer, healer, teacher of literature, mysticism, and movement, and the originator of Otiyot Hayyot, a meditative, integrative movement form rooted in Kabbalah and designed to help the mover access the spiritual light and life force hidden within the Hebrew letters.
Michael Kagan is now an artist with a studio and one exhibition under his belt. His artwork hangs on three continents. He has published one volume of poetry (Beyond Time and Space) with another on the way. He is also a film maker (Tunnel of Hope) and author (Holistic Haggadah).
Pesach Rotem was born in New York, sojourned for a time in Tsfat, and resides now in Yodfat.
